Your Maine Coon kitten may look small now, but before you know it, he/she will be one of the biggest domestic cats you’ll ever see. It is recommended to get a litter box that is large enough to fit a full-grown Maine Coon. Small, medium, and some large litter boxes found in local stores might not be large enough. If you start with a smaller litter box, you will want to make sure you upgrade your Maine Coon's litter box before they outgrow it. The rule of thumb for litter boxes is to have one per pet plus one additional litter box. If you have a multilevel home, we recommend placing a litter box on each floor. Place litter boxes near an area the kitten frequents. Areas with low traffic are usually best.

If you elect to use a traditional litter box we recommend using a natural cat litter such as Paco & Pepper. This is the litter we recommend and use. Paco & Pepper is made from olive pits and offer a soft, natural material for your cat's tender feet. We highly recommend staying away from clay and silica litters. Clay litters create a mushroom cloud of dust particles, and causes dermatitis leading to dry, cracked nose and foot pads. If you decide to use a clumping litter please keep in mind that some clay, silica, and fine-grain litters tend to stick to the tufts of fur under the feet, which can be painful and difficult to remove.

Scooping litter boxes might be the last thing you want to do after a long day at work, taking care of your family, all other responsibilities, etc. This is why we use the Neakasa M1 Automatic litter box. Previously, we tried the Litter Robot, but found it to be excessively large and required to many repairs. There are many other options available to you (corn, wheat, seed, etc.). Our kittens are potty trained using Paco & Pepper litter and the Purina Tidy Cats® Breeze® XL litter system. The Tidy Cats BreezeXL® system. We use this system for our older kittens and adults. This system controls odors and works by pulling moisture away from solids and allowing all moisture to drain onto a pee pad located in a drawer at the base of the box. The mineral pellets are anti-tracking and can be used for a month or more and pee pads last about three to four days depending on the number of cats and frequency of use. Out of all the litter boxes and systems we’ve tried this system is our favorite non-automatic system.

If you prefer an automatic litter box the one we’ve found to work best for our Maine Coons is the Neakasa M1.
